Intorduction

Most of you must have come across this term (if not yet, you will soon enough!) - "Web 2.0". I have been quite interested in this topic ever since I read about it online. Though at first I thought it was just something related to a new coding practice but I was proved wrong. The more I read about it, the true power of this paradigm shift became apparent. It has applications not just in field of computer science, it stretches across to education, finance and even affects social aspect.
As explained on Wikipedia - "Web 2.0, a phrase coined by O'Reilly Media in 2004, refers to a perceived second-generation of Web-based services—such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies—that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users."
I hope to explore more about this new paradigm and try to uncover the "magic" behind this. I believe my exploration will help me use the knowledge I gain to move the Math Lab I manage into a new direction (since most math classes on UF campus are going online and are using more technology than before).

Please refer to the following wikipedia article to get a much thorough insight into the world of Web 2.0.

"Web 2.0" is probably too broad a topic to study. "Web 2.0 and higher ed math education" is more appropriate.

Amey - I look forward to seeing what you uncover about Web 2.0. I honestly do not know that much about it. I did run accross this video on Web 2.0. It gave me the general run down. I look forward to reading what you uncover!

Thanks - Laurie Kitchie

This does seem like a rather broad topic. You definitely won't be in my boat where I've found three things to talk about total-- all from research journals.

I definitely can see that all of these issues are applicable to the classroom, and I've seen a lot of tutoring (which I believe is the primary function of the math lab) moving online. I was hired to do online tutoring in chemistry but decided their pay was not worth my time in the crazy schedule I've got now, but it was an entire system designed to tutor online in many subjects. Their site was www.tutor.com.

Megan,

I recently went to a professional developement on Garageband. Have you used this? I am ona mission now to become a pro at this, not to make music, but to do podcasts. Have you ever used podcasts? If so, I would love your input. It is such a great teaching tool!
